Five Facts to Know & Share About The Stitch
1. A New Neighborhood Bridging Midtown and Downtown
The Stitch will transform a longstanding physical barrier into a welcoming public space and neighborhood. Phase 1 will be a 5-acre park built directly over the Downtown Connector, supported by 8 miles of streetscape and transportation improvements.
2. Repairing a Historic Divide
Beyond physical infrastructure, the project is an act of civic repair. It addresses the legacy of displacement caused by interstate construction, acknowledging the erased history of neighborhoods like Buttermilk Bottom while restoring a sense of continuity in the city’s core.
3. Unlocking $9 Billion in Economic Value
As a catalyst for downtown competitiveness, The Stitch is forecast to generate over $9 billion in economic value for Georgia. The project will spark redevelopment across 53 acres of underutilized land near the site and create 4,500 construction jobs.
4. Driving Inclusive Housing Growth
The master plan ensures this new neighborhood will be accessible and attainable. The Stitch creates the conditions to support up to 25,000 new homes, setting a goal for 30 percent of all residential units within a half-mile of the project to be affordable at 80% AMI.
5. Backed by Real Momentum and Local Commitment
Implementation is actively underway through the newly formed non-profit, Stitch, Inc. The City of Atlanta and local partners have already committed over $30 million to the project and created a new tax district to fund long-term operations and maintenance.
“The Stitch will reshape North Downtown into a thriving and equitable new district centered around a verdant and vibrant urban park over the Downtown Connector. [It] is a community-driven once-in-a generation project that will reconnect Downtown Atlanta and have a far-reaching impact on our entire region.”
